  Isabel Roces, A Class Act

When Isabel Roces walks into a room, one cannot help but get awe struck. This statuesque beauty’s regal bearing almost contrasts with the big smile on her face. While she can look fierce on the catwalk and in front of the camera, Isabel up close is wonderfully easy to talk to and approachable. She has been modeling for eight years now, but it was only recently that Isabel appeared in a huge spread of an edgy men’s magazine in nothing but lingerie. She says she was not nervous because she was comfortable with the people she was working with. She adds candidly, “I’ve done more extreme shoots.”

One of the most memorable images of Isabel is that of her lying naked on a bed of Thai red chili peppers, for a PETA advertisement. Being an avowed vegetarian, Isabel is quite involved with the controversial group People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals, better known worldwide as PETA, and is in fact one of its local endorsers. As expected, the sizzling hot campaign certainly got everyone’s attention and converted not a few into her advocacy. That’s Isabel–willing to do the extreme, but always pulling it off with class.

Recently, Isabel became one of Philippine Daily Inquirer’s weekly beauty columnists. “Backstage Pass” gives a glimpse into the creativity-charged world of fashion. She’s happy with her new writing gig. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she confesses, mentioning that her brother and grandfather (the late great Chino Roces, a famed publisher) are writers.

While she says that she’s not a naturally “kikay” person, she has grown to love the industry that celebrates style and beauty because of her work and the people she meets. The best part of her writing gig is that she has found a new respect for the other jobs found in the backstage of fashion shows—the directors, the production and stage people, stylists and makeup artists, “They can create an image from nothing!” she says about them.

For now, Isabel’s busy with modeling, staying involved with PETA and her newspaper column. She looks forward to practicing her interior design degree (Isabel’s a graduate from the Philippine School of Interior Design) soon. With her creative talent and wise choices, inevitable success lurks just around the corner.
